Each year Troop 868 sponsors a Fishing Derby to which we invite Cub Scouts from all area packs.  The event is held at a privately-owned pond where just about every Cub manages to catch at least one fish ... most do a lot better than that!  Fishing is always a lot more fun when one catches fish!  Boy Scouts from Troop 868 run the whole show and cook lunch for everyone.  Trophies are awarded in several different categories, including some for casting contests that are done in an open field and don't require catching fish.  The weather this year was perfect ... sunny and around 70 degrees.  The turnout was lighter than we had expected, but those who came all had a great time.

Bear Cub Scout William came ready to catch fish. Webelos Cub Scout Thomas shows off a 21" catfish he caught.
Troop 868 Boy Scout Andrew with Webelos Cub Scout Micah. Webelos Cub Scout Tony.
Assistant Cubmaster Steven Frank with Webelos 2 Den Leader (and wife) Billy Frank. Webelos 1 Assistant Den Leader Trish Weaver.
Cub Scouts, parents, and siblings fishing along all sides of the private lake.  No one was crowded for space and everyone had a different opinion as to the best spot to catch the big one!
Pack Committee Chairman Tom Gordon with his wife (Den Leader Coach Tonya) and mother (Gertie Hatfield). Webelos Cub Scout Rhys and his parents.
The Boy Scouts prepared and served a lunch of grilled hamburgers or ham and cheese sandwiches.  There was plenty to eat. Kenneth, Jared, Micah, James, and William all seemed to enjoy the food.
After lunch, the Cub Scouts lined up for the casting contests. Webelos Scout Thomas makes a cast.
Troop 868 Senior Patrol Leader Connor demonstrates for Cub Scouts James, Kenneth, and William. Webelos Scout Micah reels in his line after one of his attempts.  Each scout got three tries and we counted the best of the three.
