Troop 868 in Action

Scouting for Food (November, 2002)

Scouting for Food occupies two Saturdays in November.  On the first Saturday, the troop walks their assigned territory and leaves a flyer at each home asking the residents to place a bag of non-perishable groceries on their porch for pickup the following weekend.  Then, on the following Saturday, the troop returns to pick up the donations.  Troop 868 has even been known to knock on doors to solicit donations from folks who may have forgotten to set something out!

This year, Troop 868 was joined by Cub Pack 848.  The extra manpower supplied by the Cubs and their parents was a BIG help and much appreciated.  As a result of the combined effort, the two units were able to more than double the combined collection of both units from last year.

All food collected was delivered on Saturday afternoon to the Community Action Agency in Shepherdsville.  The C.A.A. uses it to provide holiday baskets and emergency food relief to local families in the Shepherdsville area.  The citizens of Shepherdsville demonstrated great generosity, and we certainly do appreciate their support of this annual service project.

Boy Scout Tim and Cub Scout Kolton work together to pick up a donation from a home in The Pointe subdivision. Tiger Cub Nolan solicits a donation from a resident in Hickory Acres (center photo) and makes another pickup from a home in the River Oaks subdivision (at right).
Some of the Boy Scout workers from Troop 868 and Cub Scout workers from Pack 848 gather around one pickup truck load of food that was collected.  More than twice as much more was in containers on the troop's bus and the units still had a few more neighborhoods to visit at the time this photo was taken.
