Scouting for Food (November, 2003)

Scouting for Food is a Council-wide community service project conducted annually on two Saturdays in November. On the first Saturday, scout units walk their assigned territories and leave a flyer at each home asking residents to place a bag of non-perishable groceries on their porch for pickup the following weekend. Then, on the following Saturday, the units return to pick up the donations. Troop 868 has even been known to knock on doors to solicit donations from folks who may have forgotten to set something out!
Again this year, Troop 868 and Cub Pack 848 joined forces to cover a huge territory consisting of 15~20 neighborhoods and several large apartment complexes.
All food collected was delivered to the Community Action Agency in Shepherdsville. The C.A.A. uses it to provide holiday baskets and emergency food relief to local families in the Shepherdsville area. Being non-perishable, the food can be stored and distributed to provide assistance as needed throughout the year.
The citizens of Shepherdsville demonstrated great generosity by donating 3,055 pounds of food! Donations ranged from one or two cans to boxes and grocery sacks filled to overflowing. We certainly do appreciate their support of this annual service project.
